Levels at ALPS

ALPS has 6 levels, from beginning to advanced.

Each level usually takes three or four 4-week sessions to complete (12-16 weeks total per level).

You study new material each session even if your level does not change.

To go to the next level, you must pass a Level-Up exam.

You can spend a maximum of six 4-week sessions in one level.

ALPS levels correspond to CEFR levels:

What Level Will You Be at ALPS?

Your starting level is determined by a combination of placement tests:

  • An online placement test for listening, grammar, vocabulary, and reading
  • An individual speaking placement test
  • A writing placement test (only if you take Intensive Reading & Writing or Intensive Test Prep)

How Long Will It Take for Me to Finish the Course?

Most ALPS students study between 4 and 72 weeks.

Your course length depends on your goals and your English level when you start!

For example, if you begin at ALPS in Level 3 and your goal is to attend an American college or university, you will need advanced English skills. You will need to advance to Level 5 or Master’s. Assuming that you take three 4-week sessions of each level, your course progression would likely look like the following:

  • 3 sessions (12 weeks) in Level 3
  • 3 sessions (12 weeks) in Level 4
  • 3 sessions (12 weeks) in Level 5
  • 3 sessions (12 weeks) in Master’s

In this scenario, your total course length would probably be 36-48 weeks.

On the other hand, if your goal is just to build your speaking confidence in a short time, you might meet your goal after a single 4-week session.

If you plan to study less than 3 sessions (12 weeks), you will remain in the same level for your entire course.
